Thomas Abel Prior: Heidelberg Castle with fantasy landscape, engraving, around 1860, after a painting by William Turner. In this painting the ruins of Heidelberg Castle are embedded in the Neckar River Valley which, flooded with light, appears to open out into an endless expanse. It was inspired by the English painter William Turner (1775 - 1851). He himself stayed in Heidelberg several times between 1817 and 1844 and produced numerous sketches, watercolors and paintings of the town, which are today considered to be a high point in the romantic depiction of Heidelberg.
